Alison Dickson

Originally from County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, Scottish contemporary artist Alison Dickson has lived and worked in Edinburgh for many years. Her paintings are held in private collections throughout the UK, Ireland and internationally, and she has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions, including at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.

Alison Dickson is best known for her evocative contemporary still life paintings, which explore themes of place, memory and belonging. Drawing inspiration from everyday objects, flowers, photographs and cherished objects, she creates carefully considered compositions that celebrate the quiet beauty and emotional significance of ordinary moments. Each painting suggests a subtle narrative, inviting viewers to reflect on the stories and memories held within these compositions.

Alongside her still lifes, Alison paints landscapes and seascapes inspired by the places she has called home. The coastlines and countryside of Scotland and Ireland provide an enduring source of inspiration, from lines of trees on the horizon and the rhythmic patterns of ploughed fields to isolated farm buildings and changing light across hills and sea. Travels further afield also leave lasting impressions, which she develops into paintings back in her Edinburgh studio.

Working with a limited palette, Alison simplifies form, colour and perspective to create paintings that balance observation with gentle abstraction. Her process combines a structured approach also skewers, knives, printmaking techniques and collage to create shifting dynamics within each piece
